Arboretum Tour: Maher-a-Lago
The Newport Tree Conservancy invites you to take a stroll through Maher-a-Lago Arboretum.
Maher-a-Lago is a garden hidden gem, situated just off the banks of Almy Pond. The small garden property, which is packed with nearly 50 woody plant species and cultivars, is bisected by a small stream leading to the pond. Moisture levels are high, and the area is prone to flooding. Plants have been successfully selected and sited for the wet conditions. For this Arboreta public day, NTC staff will discuss common garden pests and diseases, how to accurately identify them, and list reasonable methods of control.

June Free Tree Walk: Aquidneck Park
Lets enjoy a laidback late spring stroll through Newport’s Aquidneck Park to the beauty (and shade) of majestic trees.
NTC Living Collections Manager will lead the group for a loop around the park, remarking on a number of interesting species that reside in the park, including stewartia, sassafras, Kentucky coffeetree and Japanese scholar tree. Aquidneck Park is home to 31 beech tree individuals, representing 10 unique taxa. Joe will discuss these interesting varieties, and give updates on beech disease issues, and public beech tree care in Newport. Please dress appropriately for summer walk. Water is recommended.
Parking: Street parking, as well as parking at Bellevue Gardens free for 2 hours with valedation

Arboretum Tour: Salt Marsh
Join Newport Tree Conservancy for a detailed look into the delicate art of coastal gardening.
Salt Marsh Arboretum is a species diverse landscape bordering on the restored salt marshes of Gooseneck Cove. Estate gardener Devin Skelly will join us for an engaging look at the intensive restoration efforts made, involving the reestablishment of native species. Devin will show us around the arboretum, describe the horticultural and restorative work he has done, and showcase the plant collection. Highlights of the arboretum include a paperbark maple grove, young giant sequoia trees, a collection of buckeyes (Aesculus), and the rare wheel tree (Trochodendron aralioides).

July Free Tree Walk: Storer Park, Hunter House, and Point Neighborhood
Join us as we enjoy some beautiful trees and gardens, and cool ocean breezes.
Join us as we enjoy some beautiful trees and gardens, and cool ocean breezes. We’ll start off the walk in Storer Park, which houses several interesting trees, including a pair of massive Camperdown elms (Ulmus glabra ‘Camperdownii’). Then we’ll head over to the adjacent Hunter house to admire the gardens and discuss cultivating apple trees. We’ll finish off the walk heading out into the neighborhood to observe a handful of interesting plants that greatly add to the Point’s timeless charm. Please dress appropriately for walking in warm weather. Water is recommended.

This is your chance to join the Newport Tree Conservancy on a tour of the beautiful seaside Stonybrook Arboretum!
This property boasts a 20th century Gothic Revival manor house on 4.8 acres filled with gorgeous collections. Plant highlights include an extensive beech collection, a host of conifers, mature oaks, and plants capable of thriving in the harsh maritime climate. The Sakonnet river and divergent small creek, which lends the Arboretum its name, are the perfect backdrop. Please dress for the weather and walking. Water is highly encouraged.

Arboretum Tour: Oakwood
Come take a tour with NTC of the historic Oakwood Mansion!
Oakwood is a grand, mid 19th centrury estate located in the heart of the city of Newport. The property, five acres in total, is a plant lovers paradise! The arboretum has several different unique garden spaces, from the beech collection along Spring Street, to the wisteria arbor and laburnum walk, winding over to the attention grabing lily pond. The pond, a rectangular cement pool, contains several beautiful aquatic species including sacred water lotus and fantastic victorian lilys. A humbling fernleaf beech tree (Fagus sylvatica 'Asplenifolia') has the ability to bring one to their knees.

Arboretum Tour: Broadlawns
The Newport Tree Conservancy welcomes you for a guided tour of the grand property Broadlawns.
Broadlawns is an expansive, early 19th centrury bayside property with beautiful views and an inpsiring collection of trees, including several majestic beech trees dating back to the 19th centrury. A meadow path curves down to the historic "Point of Trees" location, a navigational landmark found on old maps. This grove of english elm trees is one of the most unique green spaces in Newport. Other plant material features include: noble Turkish trees, masssive rhododendrons, impressive Yoshino Japanese Cedars, and an array of flowering trees and shrubs.

Arboretum Tour: Bellevue House
Join the Newport Tree Conservancy as we tour the breathtaking gardens of Bellevue House Arboretum!
Enjoy the landscape full of formal pollarded lindens, a traditional Japanese stroll and pond garden, and moss garden thriving under a natural sheltered space created by an immense Fernleaf Beech (Fagus sylvactica ‘Asplenifolia’). With our tour set for late April, the daffodils should still be in full regelia. Bellevue House features a massive Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) that predates the house built in 1910 and is suspected to be the oldest and largest on Aquidneck Island. Other specimen trees include a magnificent Scots pine, massive English yews, Turkish oak, and a redleaf Japanese maple .

Talking Trees: Heritage Trees
Join us at the Heritage Tree Center to learn about what classifies trees as a heritage tree!
Part of the Newport Tree Conservancy's mission is to propagate and grow heritage trees. But what gives a tree that classification? How, in a city full of charismatic and historic trees, do we pick what to propagate and preserve? Join Plant Production Manager Morgan Palmer at the Heritage Tree Center to learn about our heritage tree selection process, how we propagate and care for them, and why it is an important part of what we do. A tour of the nursery will follow where we will see a selection of heritage trees growing alongside other exciting and beautiful specimens.

This beautiful Arboretum, covering one-quarter of an acre, is rich in diverse plant life.
This beautiful Arboretum, covering one quarter of an acre, is rich in diverse plant life. The owners have cultivated a gorgeous collection of trees of Japanese origin, including four species of Japanese maple, the herbaceous perennial Kirengeshoma palmata, and the Japanese Wood Poppy. Pax et Bonum Arboretum also features ingenious water conservation through existing infrastructure uncovered on the property and expertly trained espaliered fruit trees which display how space can be efficiently used to create a truly unique home garden.

The Newport Tree Conservancy invites you to take a stroll through Second Wind Arboretum.
This Ocean Drive Neighborhood gem on 2.7 acres includes Gingko plantings, forested wetland featuring native Amelanchier canadensis and Acer rubrum, and the owner’s Heritage Collection – specimen trees planted in honor of members of the family inspired by favorite trees planted along Bellevue Avenue. This vibrant, whimsical property is a must see!

The Preservation Society of Newport County presents a Free Educational Program: Iconic Trees of Newport II
Impressive specimen trees are essential to Newport’s character and their loss threatens the city’s reputation as the “Eden of America.” This forum will explain the cause of beech leaf disease, new treatment strategies, proper beech tree culture and proactive tree planting to ensure a green future.
Following on the successful forum held last June, this presentation is an update organized by a collaboration among Bartlett Tree Experts, The Newport Tree Conservancy, the City of Newport, Salve Regina University, Aquidneck Land Trust and The Preservation Society of Newport County.
Speakers will include Natasha Harrison and Joe Verstandig of the Newport Tree Conservancy, Terry Sullivan of Aquidneck Land Trust, Jeff Curtis and Jim Donahue of the Preservation Society and research staff from Bartlett Tree Experts.
This program is free, but registration is required.

May Free Tree Walk: Island Cemetery
Come along for a pleasant May stroll through Newport’s beautiful Island Cemetery.
NTC Living Collections Manager Joe Verstandig will share some of his recent plant discoveries in the cemetery, highlighting some interesting plant features. Lilacs will be a point of discussion, from their history in American cultivation, to how to grow and prune them for best flowering effect. Other flowering trees and shrubs, such as Kwanzan cherries and dogwoods should be peaking as well.

April Tree Walk: Miantonomi Park
Join us to learn about the trees and history of Newport’s largest public park!
Join the Newport Tree Conservancy and longtime Newport Tree Warden Scott Wheeler for an exciting adventure through Miantonomi Park. Scott will lead the tour, discussing the history of the park and the numerous specimen trees it contains, many of which he planted through the years. The tour will loop the entire park and include a visit into the Miantonomi Memorial Park tower. Please note that this walk will be moderately strenuous, and appropriate footwear should be worn.

Arboretum Tour: Bois Doré
Join Newport Tree Conservancy as we explore Bois Doré Arboretum.
The stately trees at Bois Doré Arboretum will impress even the most modest tree lovers, and remain engrained in the memory of those who have serious dendronlogical passions. Highlights of the collection include the alleé of pollarded silver lindens, perhaps the finest landscape feature of its kind in Newport. The signature beech cultivars, 'Atropunicea', 'Pendula', and 'Asplenifolia', are well represented, as well as other Newport classics including london plane, european hornbeam, and common horsechestnut. A host of rhododendron varieties, lilacs, conifers, and a massive weeping cherry provide the finishing touches to an outstanding woody plant collection.

Talking Trees: Growing Trees from Seed
Join us at the Heritage Tree Center to learn about growing trees from seed!
How do such mighty organisms begin their journey as the tiniest seed? We will learn the different methods and treatments that tree seeds require to germinate, why that might be, and even do some seeding together!

Newport Tree Canopy Open House
Join NTC for an Open House at Innovate Newport hosted by The Green Infrastructure Center (GIC) in partnership with the city of Newport to discuss and vote on strategies for the City to promote trees for reducing urban heat, mitigating flood damage, and improving community health.
Newport’s Tree Canopy: The Current State & Future Goal
36% of Newport’s land is covered by impervious surfaces (pavement, concrete, buildings).
19% of the city is covered by trees.
Goal: Increase tree cover to 21% over the next decade.

Native Pot-Up Volunteer Event
Join us at our treehouse on the grounds of Rogers High School to help pot native trees that will soon take root in Miantonomi Park—Newport, RI’s largest and most historic park.

March Tree Walk: Redwood Library, Newport Art Museum, & Old Beach Ave
Join us as we breathe fresh spring air and admire a handful of beautiful trees!
Our first monthly tree walk of 2025, we will be touring the grounds of the Redwood Library and the Newport Art Museum, and venture down Old Beach Avenue before looping back to Bellevue. NTC Living Collections Manager Joe Verstandig will be discussing some early spring tree phenology, bask in the glory of some incredible specimen beech and oaks, and admire early flowering woody plants. Please dress appropriately for walking on the street and on grass.

Magnolia's at a Glance: An Informative Look at a Most Fascinating Group of Flowering Trees
Magnolias continue to be one the premier groups of flowering trees available for northeastern gardens and landscapes. Known worldwide for their enchanting spring and summer blooms, everyone should have at least one magnolia in their garden.
In this virtual presentation, NTC Living Collections Manager Joe Verstandig will discuss the fascinating history of Magnolias, feature Newport’s most impressive specimens, and discuss the many great cultivars available to Rhode Island gardens. Plant Production Manager Morgan Palmer will discuss the propagation and growing of magnolias at NTC’s Heritage Tree Center. This is something you do not want to miss!

Talking Trees: NTC's Winter Propagation Projects
Join us to learn about and tour our winter propagation projects in the warmth of a beautiful greenhouse!
We will talk about grafting heritage trees, see the progress of our evergreen cuttings, and discuss the methods behind these winter propagation methods and why they’re an important part of what we do at NTC.
Community Tree Program
Planting Trees For All Newporters
The Newport Community Tree Program connects residents with free and reduced-cost tree plantings.
The program is open to all Newport residents, you do not need to own your home to request a new tree planting.
Trees may be planted on City property, along the street or sidewalk, or up to 20ft onto private property.
Addresses within Newport’s Health Equity Zone (HEZ), outlined on the map below, may request a new tree free of charge.
All other Newport residential addresses may request a tree planting for the subsidized cost of $125.
Talking Trees: Celebrating Trees
Join us at Harbor House for our December discussion!
Join us as we explore how trees have been incorporated into holiday traditions and celebrations! We'll focus on how trees have been involved in celebrations throughout time, how they were used, and the symbolism they hold. Since the greenhouse will be chilly and closed for the winter, we will spend some time indoors at Harbor House celebrating trees with a small creative activity!

Talking Trees at HTC: How to Read the History of a Tree
Join us at our Heritage Tree Center for our November discussion!
Join us at the Heritage Tree Center for an informative discussion on how trees record history, how that information is used in climate science, and how to interpret Newport’s history through the rings of a heritage tree. A brief tour of the November happenings at the greenhouse will be included, as well as a chance to ask questions and see our heritage trees before they get put to bed for the winter!

Miantonomi Reforestation Project
Join the Newport Tree Conservancy for our sixth year of reforestation efforts in Miantonomi Park!
Help us reach our goal of planting 100 trees in Newport’s largest forest.
With 300 native trees planted over the past four years, we are working to restore the urban forest canopy for the benefit of people and wildlife. Experience is not necessary. Tools will be provided. Bring your own gloves if possible. Registration is required. T-shirts and refreshments will be provided.

October Free Tree Walk: Rovensky Park
What better place to enjoy fall color in Newport than at Rovensky Park?
NTC Living Collections Manager Joe Verstandig and Preservation Society of Newport County Head of Grounds Jeff Curtis will discuss the park’s tree history, plant selection for difficult conditions in the park, and view the many glorious specimens. And let’s not forget the fall color, which should be picking up at this stage of October. Please dress appropriately for walking around and through the park.

Join the Newport Tree Conservancy to support the athletes running in the Amica Newport Marathon!
Newport Tree Conservancy is delighted to be supporting athletes in the Amica Newport Marathon and we are ecstatic to be receiving support from Newport Marathon/Gray Matter Marketing to support our local cause. For this event we are seeking volunteers to help us tend to the race registration and finish line support.

Tree Talks at the Heritage Tree Center

Volunteer Event: Tree Corps at Miantonomi Park
Join us as a Tree Corps volunteer by helping to care for the trees in Newports largest urban forest!
We are seeking dedicated volunteers to help care for the beautiful trees at Miantonomi Park in Newport, RI. As a volunteer, you'll help with tasks like pruning, planting, and general tree maintenance to ensure the health and longevity of the park's green spaces. Whether you're an experienced gardener or just love being outdoors, your contribution will help preserve this lovely park for future generations to enjoy.
No experience necessary, come get to know Tree Corps. Want to join us more regularly? Each week, we will be caring for Newport's city trees by mulching, pruning, and watering as needed. Volunteers are needed weekly for this recurring opportunity to make a difference in Newport's urban forest. Volunteers receive NTC T-shirts. Tools will be provided.
Please dress for the weather. Bring your own water, gloves and snacks. No open-toed shoes.

Arboretum Tour: Second Wind
The Newport Tree Conservancy invites you to take a stroll through Second Wind Arboretum.
This Ocean Drive Neighborhood gem on 2.7 acres includes Gingko plantings, forested wetland featuring native Amelanchier canadensis and Acer rubrum, and the owner’s Heritage Collection – specimen trees planted in honor of members of the family inspired by favorite trees planted along Bellevue Avenue. This vibrant, whimsical property is a must see!
