Akebono Cherry

Prunus x yedoensis ‘Akebono’

This pink yoshino cherry outside the Newport Congregational Church on the corner of Spring and Pelham Streets is the earliest of a pink pair of unmatched cherries framing the blue front doors of the stone church built in 1857. Its simple pink to white fading notched petaled flowers along thin lenticeled twigs give this tree a delicate appearance. Its neighbor a pink variety of a different cherry species, Kwanzaan cherry (Prunus serrulata ‘Kwanzaan’) will have its own pink show in a few weeks. Be sure to stop by soon to catch this stunning tree in peak bloom, and stay tuned for more must see trees in the coming weeks.
